Thoughts on hypocrisy…

October 13, 2009
By

Starting today and occurring on a regular basis, this blog will be devoted to everything the author, me, sees as going wrong with society. Today’s topic will be hypocrisy.

I hate blogs. Really. I see them as the logical evolution of an education system where everyone is told they’re a special, unique snowflake. The conceit required to assume there is an audience out in the vast expanses of the Internet who cares about the specifics of your inconsequential life is staggering. Yet we see new blogs springing up all the time, and don’t even get me started on Twitter.

There may be very specific examples where these services can be used for good — the Iranian “blogosphere” that sprung up following their elections is a recent case. But seriously, what we have for the most part is a market saturated by self-absorbed twits who have yet to experience the real world.

Which brings me to the topic of today’s post. Yes, I realize there’s a certain irony involved in writing a blog post condemning blogging. Let’s just set that aside as a necessary evil. I pledge in this inaugural “Hell in a Handbasket” entry that I will only post information on things of importance — the day I describe my totally super fantastic awesome day will be the day I will voluntarily take myself behind the woodshed.

To my two readers, thank you for your time. Until next time…

Mike…I hear you. Loud and clear like those damn birds in the morning outside my window.

I took a blogging course this year to try and diminish my disdain for blogs and the entire ‘blogosphere’ but it just isn’t helping. I find myself getting close to taking that isolated walk behind the woodshed but have managed to refrain thus far.

I look forward to your blogging exploits, so consider me reader number three. Keep the hypocrisy coming.

    Mike,

Though this was an excellent post when I first read it. However, I am disappointed to see that your November 18th article includes a link to your twitter page… mind clearing that up?

    Excellent point, SK.

As you may note – this post is entitled “Thoughts on hypocrisy…” my engaging in it should hardly be taken as a surprise.

However for less of a brush-off, I would say that The Gazette is a constantly changing beast, with Twitter accounts and blogs popping up all the time. In a similar line to how this blog was created, changes in circumstances have led me to believe that, like it or not, running a Gazette-related Twitter page is a necessary evil.

So with all that in mind I hope my choice to tweet hasn’t left you filled with antipathy. Thanks for the comments.

    Hi SK,
Mike included a link to his new Gazette Twitter account at the end of his last blog post to encourage people to follow. There are now three Gazette Twitter accounts:

    twitter.com/StuartAtGazette
    twitter.com/ArdenAtGazette
    twitter.com/HayesAtGazette

No antipathy here. I completely understand, so thanks for clearing that up.
