Silver Starling cites loss as inspiration for new albumLooking for an alternative to Richmond Row? Maybe Diallo and Chedo of Western’s CHRW radio can fill that void.
Every Thursday beginning tonight, Diallo and Chedo — who together make up Jetset — will coordinate live 19+ events at The Wave for Western’s student population.
“Jetset began as an urban push,” Diallo said. Diallo, a CHRW producer, and Chedo, a CHRW award-winning DJ, noticed a lack in urban music culture in the London community. Jetset hope to re-expose the urban scene of hip-hop and R&B culture to Western students, but they also want to bring together different types of entertainment and musical genres in an atmosphere that is “classy but entertaining,” Diallo added.
The Wave will be the new spot for Jetset on Thursday nights as they present an eclectic lineup of performers and shows. “This is just going to be a different facet and genre we’ll be able to [offer] students,” Jeff Armour, University Students’ Council food and beverage manager, said. “We’re really excited about it,” he added.
Tonight Jetset welcome the Caribbean Students Organization of Western to kick-off the new weekly event. Other upcoming events include a CD release party for the new Kid Famous album and music provided by Bascrom Entertainment.
Diallo spoke about various ideas Jetset has in the works for their weekly events. They hope to involve Western clubs in a fashion show that may include designers from Toronto, and all of the proceeds will go to charity.
Being part of the entertainment won’t be exclusively for established outside acts. Jetset will incorporate the competitive instincts of Western students into their Thursday nights as well by giving them the chance to win prizes through freestyle, producing and dance competitions.
Thursdays tend to be one of the more popular nights to hold events, according to Armour, so he anticipates a healthy response from students this evening.
Jetset is accepting e-mails from anyone interested in participating in future shows and showcasing their talents. Drop them at line at therealjetset@gmail.com.
